Here are some interesting food invention stories that will amaze……and hungry!
1. Your handy Ice Cream Cone.
Before 1904, people ate ice creams in bowls with spoons. One day in St. Louis World Fair an ice cream seller had no dishes left to serve ice cream to his customers. His neighbor stall owner, Ernest Hamwi, came to his rescue.
He rolled up his waffles in the shape of a cone and served ice cream in it. It became a hit with the customers and now you eat it the same way!
2.Have a yummy Cheeseburger.
Who doesn’t love to sink their teeth into a yummy cheeseburger? Well, people before 1920s had no idea what it tasted like.
One day, a youthful chef Lionel Sternberger, burned a hamburger. Instead of replacing it with another one, he simply put a cheese slice to cover the burned part and served it. The customer loved it and voila – your cheeseburger was born!
3.Pass me a Sandwich.
Before 1700s people ate their bread with butter or marmalade. The story goes like this – once Earl of Sandwich, John Montagu, was so engrossed in gambling that he called for the meals at his table.
His cook would bring the salted meat by placing it between two slices of bread so that he could eat it quickly. His companions would order it too saying – same as Sandwich!
Boom – your sandwich was invented!
4.Reach out for Potato Chips.
In 1853, Chef George Crum lost his cool one day when a customer sent his fried potatoes back again and again.
Irked, he sliced the potatoes as thin as he could, fried them, sprinkled salt on them and sent it as the last batch. Needless to say the customer relished its crunch and taste. Soon potato chips were the rage of the town!
5.Bite into Chocolate Chip Cookies.
In 1930, an Inn’s owner Ruth Wakefield found out that she had no baking chocolate left. She broke up a semi sweet Nestle` chocolate into bits and added them to her batter thinking they will melt and blend in.
Instead she came up with a batch of cookies with chocolate chunks in them. Soon her Inn became famous for her chocolate chip cookies, we dig so much till date!
6.For the love of Popsicle.
Did you know your favourite ice candy was invented by an 11 year old? In 1905, Frank Epperson accidently left his soda equipment in the porch.
Next morning he found that the liquid has frozen along with a stirring stick in it. He took it out and enjoyed licking the frozen soda flavor – world’s first popsicle was invented!
7.Grab your Nachos.
In 1943, Ignacio Nacho Anaya was faced with ten famished women customers and no chef in sight at the restaurant he worked. To save face, he layered a plateful of tostadas with grated cheese.
He passed it through a broiler that heated food from top and decorated it with jalapenos. The ladies loved it. Later, he opened his own restaurant and sold it as the famous ‘Nachos’.
