India is a Secular country, and it celebrates how beautifully the different religions mingle together, She has a great past where She served as home to great emperors like Ashoka and Akbar. India has received its colors from Her people and She proudly carries her colorful soul. Be it the color of fertility, growth, and auspiciousness or the color of strength and courage, India wears them on Her crown, a perfect example for this is the Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb running in the northeastern region.
The Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb is the yield of the northeastern region of India where the glorious culture of Ganga and Yamuna meet. Somebody asked me once to define what exactly is Ganga-Jamnuni Tehzeeb, this is all I could come up with:
” Jaha hum holi khel ke namaz ada kare vo hai Ganga Jamuni Tehzeeb. Jaha hum sajde mai sir jhuka fir gale milte hai vo hai Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb aur Jaha hum Hindu aur Musalmaan nahi jahan hum insaan hain vo hai ganga-jamuni tehzeeb.”
The northeastern cities like Lucknow, Allahabad, Kanpur, Varanasi, Faizabad, Ayodhya, and others are homes to the blend of Hindu and Muslim community and this Ganga Jamuni Tehzeeb is an evidence of the peaceful existence of these two communities bonded with the strings of Love. Here you can actually witness Hindus arranging for Iftaar in the holy month of Ramzaan and Muslims celebrating Bada Mangal in State Capital. As a strong example of this Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb, In Lucknow, almost 80 percent of the meat shops are closed during the days of Navaratra as most Hindus abstain from non-vegetarian delicacies during these nine auspicious days. Not just this but the Muslim brothers are often seen doing ‘Sewa’ in langars organized in gurdwaras.
The Two communities might have had some really major conflicts back in the past but always this bond has brought them back together. Many times Lucknow has taken stands for promoting communal harmony in the state be it through organizing Alvida namaz dedicated to peace or holding a musical night solely for promoting brotherhood. India is a proud Multicultural country where despite some little conflicts the different communities stand together forever for each other.
Many writers have tried to pen-down this Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb but Kabir has completely aced at it :
कोई जपे रहीम रहीम कोई जपे है राम!
दास कबीर है प्रेम पुजारी, दोनों को परनाम!!
Some chant O Merciful [Allah] Some chant Ram!
Kabir is a worshiper of true love, And Salutes them both!!
